A former Kentucky union official pleaded guilty to embezzling nearly $40,000 from her labor organization employer between May 2011 and March 2018.
According to court documents, the 54 year old was employed as the financial secretary for United Steel Workers Local 14637, the union for employees of Appalachian Regional Healthcare. Her responsibilities included paying bills for the union, maintaining financial records and generating checks.
The former financial secretary admitted she paid herself for time she wasn’t due as well as paying herself for unauthorized meals and for unauthorized services rendered.
“In order to enrich herself, she betrayed a trust placed in her and damaged the financial well-being of an organization designed to protect the interests of its members. She is now facing the consequences of her crime” said Carlton S. Shier, IV, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky.
The former Kentucky union official is scheduled to be sentenced on November 1st. She faces a maximum of 5 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000.
